Nothing Big, Nothing Big… Yeah I said it Twice. LOL

Nothing Like Catching up with folks you haven’t seen or heard from in a while, I just got in contact with someone who was in HS band with me. Good stuff.

Folks seem to have enjoyed the photos from the Bayou Classic. I’m just waiting on these videos to be done with. I spent nearly 3 hours uploading a clip via Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 and it failed. I have 2 going now on Youtube, direct from the web.

Speaking of Photos, I was messing with Sea about that old photographer who told me that he liked her body. LOL she thought that was gross. LOL. I had fun at the battle through. this time my footage was way better simply because I have a good cam. otherwise im still not as steady as I want to be and my handle on the stabilizer is stripped at the screw area.

All today I've been getting comments beneath pictures, aside from that folks are asking for clips. even though others have already released their footage. lol. it’s cool though.

The Alumni band has started again, I’ll decline this time around for personal reasons. most having to do with Life, no beefs or anything. it’s just that I got things to do and things to get done. it’s likely I’ll tape the even though.

After a weekend that had my back and legs sore. I came home only to watch Shanice try bag a turkey.. funny!

as for the rest of the night, folks asked why wasn’t I out.. well hey.. LOL I was hurtin..lol

Glad this is almost finished

I’m actually still working on footage as we speak.

I’ll be on maybe another Hour b4 I head to bed.

Seaera’s  a notable member of the dolls and is from here in N.O. which makes the photo 100x Better.  why? well, because… N.O.B.M.S.T.

Happy Thanksgiving My People

Today I Prepare for tomorrow and the day after. I’ll be once again doing Bayou Classic with Marchingsport. My Brother may not be in attendance but he’s been here since early today. and will be here for the next 3 days, I’m happy.

I think It’s amazing. This is one of many years to come where I’ve seen folks go from High school to college, do 4 years in band and graduate. that’s cool to me, makes me feel old. but it makes me feel somewhat accomplished..lol

I found that my buddy Jermani will be graduating, happy for her. she worked hard for it. Same for Karmyn and some other folks they’re great people I hope they’re all successful in what ever it is they may pursue.

This year.. All Video from the classic. I plan on making this look like a movie. LOL.
After I get off this PC I’m going to prepare for that..  lol...I got time though.

I didn’t do much today but I’m good..

Talk about a bad Introduction..

This happened at the Battle of the bands last Saturday..lol oh.. it isn't over I have something else for ya.. not tonight though…

Vimeo | New Orleans

I typed in New Orleans on Vimeo.com’s search engine to see what I’d come up with.  So far I’ve seen videos on folks time here. others are just common city treasures caught on camera.

I’ll share my thoughts on the videos posted in this entry.

New Orleans from Daniel Xavier on Vimeo.

The To Be Continued Brass Band is always Jazzin’ it ip on the corner of Bourbon and Canal.

New Orleans from Heritage Research Institute on Vimeo.

Katrina Discussion taking place. The Order & Chaos that occurred… partly because of Marshal Law. and how or why it could have been prevented or better taken care of.

New Orleans from Nazneen Zahan on Vimeo.

This one is about financial support donated from small Islamic country called Quatar in support of rebuilding New Orleans.  That’s wild to me.

Butlers in New Orleans 2009 from Brian Butler on Vimeo.

I Love how this video was shot, A family’s New Orleans Experience. makes me want to go out and see the sights. LOL

Unmasking New Orleans from Wolf on Vimeo.

THIS IS TRUTH!!…….That’s all I can say to that!  I talked to my boy Josiah about something similar a while back. ..it’s just one of those things man I believe the East should come back strong too. but hey that guy 100% on point about seeing a river that looked like it was trained..  yeah man… folks just seem to want to build where they want to build…but hey. it’s one of those things we have to live with.

Preservation Hall | New Orleans from Tim Barbini on Vimeo.

Don’t have much to say about this. but hey it’s nice..

GROOVY 7 | NEW ORLEANS from Prodigy Media Group on Vimeo.

I’m loving the way this video was shot.

New Orleans Street Performers from Bruce Clarke on Vimeo.

Never saw these guys before…lol wow..

well that’s it for now..

In other news

My Brother should be back in town tonight Yeah, He’s visiting for this weekend and may be leaving Saturday or Sunday. in a way I can’t wait till he gets here!. lol

I Think the situation between North & South Korea is messed up man. I hope that can be resolved without any more attacks.

I was watching RAW last night and I’ll have to admit. The Miz winning the WWE title tonight was kind of  Crazy to me. I didn’t think it would happen, I guess he waited till Cena was out of the picture to make that happen.

Now that I think about it. I might have alot of folks mad at me about my opinion regarding that thing on HBO.. but hey.. it’s not only how i feel. it’s true.. lol

I need to finish some work in this house and get to bed, I haven’t been to sleep yet and its 10am.. shame.

I Don’t agree with all the heat against LG

Although I spoke about this before the weekend, I have more to say because the HBCU bandsmen are talking, those who marched with LG or were members of the SU band are outraged by the interview. there’s even somebody lashing out at the him under the HBO clip on YouTube.

Folks are speaking on the Level of Loyalty He had for the band and his peers. He’s being called fake and all kinds of things.  what they don’t realize is that he did nothing more but expound on a situation that had already been made public. The Media isn't demonizing SU’s band more than they've done damage to their own reputation for allowing it to come to this point.  They’ve always had somewhat of a Dual reputation and it's always been known by the band community & fans of the bands..

Things Fights & Hazing situations either making the news or caught on camera, these situations are always talked about amongst the band community.. but folks only see it as a problem when  the issue gets public attention There’s no need for band heads to act brand new.. You don’t have to protect what has already been spoken. Let the people know what goes on and change the way the band functions internally. there’s no sense on keeping what you assume is tradition. because it’ll always result in the downfall of these organizations.

It’s like Making the MLB Hall of Fame and having an Asterisk next to your name. when you could have avoided the asterisk by playing fair and doing the right thing to get to where you have come,

I mentioned on bandhead.org 2 days ago,  that non-band folks who grow up watching these bands have an idea of what happens simply because they hear the stories of what goes on.  those or the folks who typically glorify the hazing aspect but give excuses to why they didn’t march.. they’re also the same folks quick to assume that others were scared to get hazed.  .. Why make that assumption if you made no effort trying to join the band.

Anyone going in to these bands normally know what they’re getting into. they have the option to not do it. but many of them choose to do it for cool points.  at the end of the day it doesn’t matter to anybody but the parties involved.

I’m not an advocate of hazing but I did take part in it in High school. the only reason is because it was something that happened to me during my first year. it wasn’t a traditional thing. nor did it make me better at what i did.  Hazing has no positive effect on any bandsmen, it only makes that member paranoid. My boy Billy Dee got hit by a speeding truck while running away from upperclassmen… yeah it was a freak accident but it happened partly as a result of what could have been a physical hazing. the dude survived and is well now. but he sure couldn’t come back to the band full time because of it.

Generally, The SU folks feel singled out simply because of the 2 minute clip. but the focus will be on all HBCU bands, and may have a negative affect on our craft. many are saying our craft is being disrespected but its something that would come sooner or later. To me I’m not surprised by it because the bands being highlighted seemed to be asking for this kind of attention.  This show is only going to prove that the kind of hazing that occurs within these bands is pointless.

We only can protect our craft by doing what's right.  otherwise we’re hurting our own.

It airs tonight and I will be watching.

Rally for the Truth | Grand Isle, LA

This was a rally from yesterday in Grand Isle, LA. The folks there are tired dealing with BP and everything in relation to the oil disaster. shame. I just thought I’d share at least one of the videos I saw.

Saturday was a good one

I attended the Baker High School battle of the Bands, the bands were real nice.  The event was nice but It got out of hand during the stands battle. I was joked out the whole night be cause of it.. All the bands were playing at once and the smallest band went nearly unnoticed.  another band had a crazy announcer and everything.

I met Willie P’s Brother Marlon. we were up there laughin at everything.  after the battle I swear we didn’t know where to turn because bands were blowing all over the place.. I managed to get enough. I’m good..LOL!

oh and by the time I got back home (which was at 1am today actually) I found that Texas Southern beat UAPB and are the SWAC West Champs and are heading to the SWAC championship. That’s great for them.  I love that.

It’s a Messed up City we live in.

After Reading the comments and news reports about Messy Mya’s murder, I think it’s just sad that we live in a city plagued by murder. according to the comments beneath this article at Nola.com. His mother was Killed  long ago by her Boyfriend who apparently killed himself when police broke down the door.

It’s even mentioned that His Grandpa’s a local businessman who’s currently in prison for charges of corruption dating back to Marc Morials term as mayor.  Folks are commenting about is grandfather and he has nothing to do with anything. The only reason his grandfather was mentioned was to Tie Messy Mya’s real name to a name we would recognize.

The articles and comments all talk about his Videos being outspoken, comedic, and even outlandish for some. others feel like his style of comedy got him “popped” as he would say “Now who gon’ Pop me?” …  Others are responding to these articles acknowledging the fact that all he did was entertain. it’s what made him who he was. He wasn’t a criminal he was an entertainer.  He was a MAN in preparation of being a father. He was just doing what he loves to do and It’s sad that he won’t get to see his child.

With that said. I’ve seen the photos from the vigil with Signs that say “Enough Is Enough” and I feel it I’m just glad that things are being said and done about this crime. but it’s one of many that need to be resolved. nobody has to die like that. or put online dead for that matter. this is one of the few times I’ve seen a community take action against crime to the point where social networking is heavily involved.  There’s now a suspect and it’s all because the people are talking. that’s a great thing. Shouldn’t have happened at all.

HBO’s Bit on Hazing in HBCU bands

I gotta watch this when it airs

LG’s telling the truth there. Sounds like the harsh reality of band but I totally understand because it’s  what really goes on. I’m guessing it was part of his agreement with the court, I don’t know but I’m glad he’s keeping it real & telling it like it is. That 2 minute piece makes me want to see the whole thing.

The Irony and of course it’s intentional is the fact that they’re airing this before the Bayou Classic.  it’s been two years and the band has been trying to move beyond it since then. but it seems as though they’re being slapped in the face with it again.

in the past 2 years This year they’ve managed to do a load of events counting news documentaries and so on that were great for the band. this particular documentary just basically uses them as an example for the many bad things that come out of these bands.

At this point I see that the documentary isn’t only about Southern University’s band, but about all HBCU Bands and hazing incidents.  They’re just using SU because there's made world news.

Seems like The people on the band forums aren’t surprised. Many of them who have marched in SU’s band hates the idea that they’re front and center but IMO it just about comes with the territory. It’s like asking how could bands so great, and have what seems to be a dark side?.  If I were asked that. my only answer would be.  It happens in organizations Everywhere.

To expound on that though would be similar to what Dr. Liddell from JSU said after the incident at JSU Most incoming freshmen already know what to expect when they get in these bands.  It’s part of what makes them want to join the band. but when nothing is done to prevent this from the beginning it could get out of control fast. That’s not exactly what he said but hey it’s true.  the thing is, The students have the option to say no. even if they’re forced they can avoid physical hazing..  (Mainly a beating)

Overall, as said above It sparked madness on the band forums, most questioning HBO’s reason for airing. Others defending their school's name. others lashing out at Bryant Gumbal *lol* some event balancing the playing field asking why is this focusing on HBCU’s when it happens at Predominantly White Colleges as well.

One person commented saying that the HBCU sports market is small that he doubts that many will even watch.  at the same time it could ruin potential sponsorships for the bands within the documentary.

all in all, Hazing is bad, Everybody in any organization has seen it or experienced it in some fashion. it’s not something bands are denying. band members talk about hazing openly amongst each other no mater what band they were in. it’s not something we glorify. it’s just something that happens. I don’t think its 100% Preventable but if members make the decision to stand against it. Hazing wouldn’t be an issue.

The Truth about band is, in order to get something you got to go through something. every aspect of band is a challenge, no mater your rank is. Our bands train like Armies. it’s like Survival of the fittest. you’re either do what it takes to stay in or Quit. You don’t have to be pressured into being physically or mentally abused  by peers to understand that.

Note From The Book

Looks like my content isn’t worthy of revenue

Finally, I’ve fixed the revenue service on YouTube. The problem now is applying for each video.  YouTube asks for rights of content usage. and technically I do have a right to use this footage. It’s my own recording at events where recording is allowed.

Well, Unfortunately I’m being denied activation because I haven't provided adequate documentation of commercial use of my content. I think that’s weird. I guess I’ll have to come up with some kind of long document to add to video to make this work.  my videos get lots of hits and I think I disserve to be part of the partnership program. There are accounts that have 2 and 3 videos are already on the thing. I have over 300 and I’m generating nothing from my content.

first I get the go ahead to have my content activated, then suddenly they disable it because may not have full rights… (SMH)…I have to figure this one out myself….

Stuff, Stuff and More Stuff

fam842Ahh man, So In the past 2 days I’ve managed to find a load of nostalgia on to Facebook.
I ran across pictures from old Ebony and Jet Magazines dating back to the 60’s with bands and auxiliary photography.  They were amazing.  There was even a picture from FAMU’s First televised performance.  I also found pictures of Jackson State’s band from the 30’s with their first director Dr. Holly. it was amazing to me. I posted it all on Facebook.

Before that I actually stirred up controversy with information from the 90’s regarding TSU’s trip to Japan, a director contacted me and asked why’d I post the information. I told him that I felt that folks who bring it up don’t really know what happen. I’d rather have them know the kind of things that were said than to speculate.  It’s not that bad it happened nearly 20 years ago.

There’s also the recent HBO special on Black college bands about hazing that’s a hot topic right now. I don’t think its going to do any more damage to Sothern's bands reputation that it had during the time it happened. The band has moved beyond it. the most it could do is make potential sponsors stray away. I’ll be watching that.

On to other things. I have a photo slideshow I need to complete. I had actually completed it already. but the person I’m doing this for wanted to add 2 more pics to the slideshow. so I’m gonna wait til I get them.. that if she didn’t put them in the mail box.. I’ll check that in a minute.

I’m off…

TxSU’s Torture plays during Vick’s Post-Game Interview

Vick’s Interview after the Philly Eagles beat the Skins..
Maybe Sign that TSU may win the SWAC Championship .lol

Yeah I’m Here

Yeah Man Yesterday I found 5 Dollars outside Tad Gormley stadium. it was next to a car.. lol I also found some Keys. Both were in the grass, the 5 dollar bill was next to a car.  I guess it was my lucky day. LOL

That’s All for now..lol

Folks don’t think before they put stuff online

So I was informed that Messy Mya was dead, I typed it in google and there was a photo of his dead body circulating on twitter.  I was like WHY?.. it’s not what i was looking for but it’s just evil of anyone to do that not only the killing. but the photo too.

I also saw the articles about the shooting in the 7th ward. I think its all sad. because nobody deserves to die lie that.

by the looks of it. via twitter there’s a blame game going on too. The News reports didn’t release any detail but the people are putting it out there. some are doing it for the wrong reasons and i think its sad.

I don’t understand how our people can be so cruel to one another. The guy was a comedian and was well known for his videos on youtube. all he was doing was attending a baby shower. celebrating fatherhood and was killed.

It’s just terrible, man. I didn’t know him personally, but I feel that it was a heartless and disrespectful thing to do. … to anyone for that matter.

Stop the violence and stop the ignorance people of N.O.

How was my day? It was Okay.

So I went to this battle. got in late, but I’m good, I got to see some at least 6 bands perform the whole show. but this was the first time i was upset by the way things were.
Their were artist and comedians performing. cool. that’s normal. the bad part was the level of security.

Normally I’d be able to walk as i please and take pictures or whatever. today I had to go through security. it slowed me down a little bit. but I managed to get what i wanted.

I got a  shout out from Wild Wayne in there. it was cool. The bands were great. Southern performed. So many folks are asking for pics and videos. lol more will be up tomorrow

After the battle I got a Call from “STUPID” because he was mad that i didnt tape the band he was with. smh. unnecessary.

iono man but I’m done with it.. I really am.. I’ll expound in my next blog..

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Before I head to bed I have to get this one in.

I haven’t really slept in a good 2 days. naps yeah, but no True sleep.
Why? well.. Obviously.. j/k…  I’ve been getting this footage together for a DVD. and well, yeah! it’s looking pretty good.  Ocean vs Jukebox. I’m not got to sell it. I know Smokey will though. I hope he knows that I have my name all over it ..LOL it’s beautiful just beautiful.

Oh, I don’t know if I mentioned. but my brother was given Zelda: Twilight Princes, for Wii. I told my brother that I'm going to give him 25 for it because it was generous to just give away a game.. otherwise, I wanted the game anyway..LOL! ..

I was thinking about hoping in the tub and then going to get a hair cut by morning. but no, I'll wait till bayou classic weekend ..LOL

TSU play’s Grambling tomorrow, I won’t be there but I think it’s a great thing. The Initiative is in full effect ..LOL!

Looks like the 01 class still wants me to be involved in their festivities. I recently talked to one Wayne G, Class of 01’s reunion committee. They still need a photographer. I told him to keep his options open because I may not be able to do it.. That event IS scheduled for next summer though.  They still want me involved since they know they can use me. LOL glad I’m invited though

Another Project would be With an Omega Psi Phi Step Tourney, I’ll attempt at advertizing  what they need via face book after filming them.. it depends on how they’re going to make this happen. what’s wild is that he only wants about 10 minutes of footage of each. yet he wants to have only a 5 minute video or so. Boy am I going to have to start writing things down to remember! LOL! .. shame. but I’m all for it.

I Think I’m going in for tonight..  I’ll post them clips to my blog .. it’s basically both bands throughout the game battling it out.

Drifting On A Memory of Brandon Franklin

Lisa P’s  added this video to Facebook in honor of Brandon Franklin 6 months after his passing. I commented to it stating that I’d post it on my blog. why? well I love this video. I also added a comment saying that it has a dreamlike feel to it and that He Lives on through her.

Please watch

as written by Lisa P

Today is the 6 month anniversary of Brandon's death. It took me two months to be able to watch the video I shot the day we went to the second line together, less than a month before he left us, (Aside from the video of him dancing that I posted the day after the second line.) It was hard to watch this, but it almost seems that he knew something and had a message for us to see now that would maybe make us all feel a little better. He says only two words in the clip, and even though he was talking about dancing, if you look at his face before and after, it seems that there's more to it than that, almost like he knew something, and even though it still makes me cry to watch it, it also makes me feel more peaceful and happy. I have no doubt that this is what he wants for all of us who knew him and love him (always).

Very Sad yet inspirational at the same time.

They Love Book

.. Really.. they do!..SEE!

This was a small edit of a bigger video coming soon, but I particularly did it because Joselyn said it in the end…It was nice meeting both Her and Trecia. as well as Dee. (the girl in the white toward the back) which I’ve seen her before but never really “met” her ya know. LOL .. and then there's Valeria.. yes lawd!.. (the one in stripes)..  They’re all Ocean Alumni as well as Tau Beta Sigma.. and yep The Book Loves Them Too.. Laughing out loud

yeah buddy good times..

So Yeah I’m Up

I’ve been sitting here converting and uploading videos, hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to finish the full deal. with this football game. 1080i aint no joke, It took like 4 hours for a 14 minute clip to upload. but I’m good.

I have one that I’m uploading now.  after uploading this stuff, I realized that  the way the footage looks is almost PRO. a lot has to do with how I was handling the camera too. you don’t have to watch it in HD to get the idea either. it just looks like something that would be seen in a reality show. lol

Always a sour moment

After a what seemed to be a great weekend of my part as well as my moms part. we got up Sunday to some bad news in the family. I won’t speak on exactly what was discussed, but it’s just unnecessary. personal business taken way too far.  It also was a reason I decided to stay home.

What reminds me of it all is that every thing that played out on the news about situation regarding other families and glad that ours isn’t like that… and then within our family there are some things that I could just shake my head at. and the situation at hand now is just one of those moments.

otherwise I have nothing to say at all..

Had a great time out there today

Man, I got out there with Gerard,  first thing I had to do was catch up with the Ocean. and boy did I  I had a good time with them. Met some new folks, saw some old faces and reacquainted with folks I’d known for a while.  It was good times for me. Small issues prevented me from getting “great” footage. but I have some that’s good enough.

in a way I had More to say, but I guess that all sums it up. nah but yeah it was a great day for me..  The Football team Won.. TSU 57.. SU 7.. The Band kicked butt! lol..  OCEAN! OCEAN! .. Texas Southern was great. Looks like the Sprit Initiative worked.

yeah man it’s great!.. I got to see my people from TSU and SU.. lastly talked with some dancers.. ate with’em and left. lol it was nice. I’ll post pic’s and clips soon.

SUNO Parade Photos 2010

Find more photos like this on bandhead.org

McMain seems to be the band on the streets these days, they’re a “young” band just pressing on, but they’re doing big things now days.  They lead the parade.. technically behind Southern’s Royal Jewels dance team. but I’m loving what Tod’s doing over there.

I talked to Lo out there, he was telling me about a plan to have the JFK Alumni band to come together with a retirement event for Doc because he’s never had one. and because we see him as a Legend, he deserves it

I enjoyed St. Mary’s Enthusiasm, they’re getting better.

Behrman is looking decent size wise. not powerful but well balanced. I’ll post videos of them all.

I wouldn’t have went hadn’t it been for tramline… he was supposed to come roll with me but he decided to stay home claiming he over slept .. .. MAN I SHOULD”VE WENT TO SOUL TRAIN !!! lol I’m good tho..lol

Looks Like My Weekend will be great

I’ll be at the SUNO Homecoming parade in the morning t starts at 11, hopefully I’ll be able to get there and record all bands before this thing starts. I also may have to head over to Walker, it’s their homecoming as well, they also have a parade I may just do that event.

Tomorrow I’ll be at Southern (that’s if G. Howard makes his way here, I’ll talk to him It’s Ocean vs Jukebox so i Gotta be there! lol

I aint answering

I got 2 call’s from random numbers while I was sleeping. Why don’t some folks call after 12? lol IMO that’s proper timing.  one was a Virginia area code.. don’t know who that is, If they’re my Facebook friend they need to send a message or something. It’s easier to reach me that way. Now the house phone is ringing.. usually it’s nobody. therefore nobody’s going to answer the phone.

I think I’m gon’ stay off facebook today.. until later at least. just to see how folks respond. smh. for some reason. folks think I’m online when they’re on. I don’t get that.

I don’t see why they think like that

I was waking up and I over heard my brother talking to my mom about me and everything that I “don’t do”. making comparisons to other people including my lil brother.  I don’t get it at all. Not once have I talked to my mom about my brother having a car… What do I need a car for, I can’t drive.

I live in a house hold where THEY don’t even allow me to speak for myself, they all act like they have to speak for me. but when things go wrong, I get questioned. for example. The door to the room nobody goes in was open… She came in here fussing at me asking me who was in here.. I’m like I DON’T KNOW… but she insist on fussing about the room being messed up and what I don’t do.

Things like that are the reason that when I find a job, I won’t tell them anything. I haven’t asked them for anything since the time I had to get a tooth pulled. before then, hardly ever. I don’t get why they put words in my mouth saying that  always look at what other folks have.. no I don’t. I don’t complain, I’m working on me.  All I did was watch the baby. every time I say that. its “you don’t have to watch that baby”.. yeah that was true but I can’t avoid not watching him when he came at 5am. .. so all this talk about me not working when obviously I couldn’t shouldn’t matter. Now I’m free to do what I need to do. All I have to do is change my sleeping habits, wake up and Leave out at 7am. I’ll have folks tripping hard.

When I start leaving, Folks are going to wonder where I am. cause I won’t be answering the phone. Why? Because I’m always “Home” to them.. it’s all going to fall in place when I start working. Every day I wake up It’s like I have to prove everybody wrong. and when I do they’ll hate it. but I won’t care. Like they say, a job is a job.. when I start working. I’ll be working for ME. not for Them.  what ever I may prosper from that. I won’t be sharing.

Since the time I got back to N.O. everything has been put in my way to prevent me from doing what I want to do. so when I do what I want. it will be no to who ever asks me to do something for them.  Call It Selfish, I just got to say NO to everything.
